# Adding Crew to your server

Invite the Crew bot, what each permission is for, and how to check everything is ready.

You only do this once per Discord server. After that, everything is set up from the Crew website.

## Invite the bot

Open **[crew.noyralabs.com/invite](https://crew.noyralabs.com/invite)**, choose your server and click **Authorize**.

To add a bot to a server, Discord requires the **Manage Server** permission in that server. If you
don't have it, send the invite link to someone who does (usually the owner).

> [!TIP]
> The invite link always asks for exactly the permissions Crew needs, so you don't have to tick
> anything by hand. The same link is in the app under **Your organizations → Add a server**.

## Know what the permissions are for

| Permission | Why Crew needs it |
| ------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Manage Roles** | Giving and removing the Discord roles linked to Crew roles and departments, and creating Discord roles when you ask Crew to. |
| **Send Messages** | Posting job announcements and new applications in the channels you choose. |
| **Manage Messages** | Part of the standard setup; no Crew feature uses it today. |

Crew also registers the `/crew` slash commands in your server. Sending direct messages needs no
permission.

**Mention Everyone** isn't requested. Give it to the Crew bot only if you want job announcements to
ping `@everyone`, `@here` or roles that aren't mentionable.

> [!WARNING]
> Never give the Crew bot **Administrator**. It doesn't need it, and Crew is built to work with the
> smallest set of permissions.

## Move the bot's role up

Discord only lets a bot manage roles that are **below its own highest role**. In **Server Settings →
Roles**, drag the **Crew** role above every role you want Crew to give out: the roles you'll link to
Crew roles and any department roles.

Roles above the Crew bot still work for reading. Crew sees who has them, but can't hand them out
until the bot is moved above them.

## Sign in and open your organization

Go to **[crew.noyralabs.com/app](https://crew.noyralabs.com/app)** and sign in with Discord. Your server appears under
**Your organizations**. If it doesn't, click **Refresh servers**.

As the server owner you're a **Super User** straight away. Discord administrators are Super Users
too, until a role is given Super User access (see [Roles and access](/crew/roles-and-access)).

## Check the bot

In your organization, open **Settings → Integrations → Check the bot**. Crew tests the live setup
and tells you how to fix anything that's wrong:

- **Bot is in the server**: the bot is a member of your server.
- **Manage Roles permission**: the bot may give and remove roles.
- **Role order**: the bot's role is above every role Crew manages.
- **Server Members Intent**: Crew can search your members and notice roles given in Discord.
- **Bot online**: the bot is connected and receives role changes as they happen.
- **Slash commands**: `/crew` and all its subcommands are registered.
- **Direct messages**: a reminder that members only get DMs if they allow messages from server
  members.

If anything needs a new permission, the check shows a **Re-invite the bot** link. Re-inviting keeps
all your data.

### Troubleshooting

- **My server isn't listed after signing in.** Click **Refresh servers**. Make sure the bot really
joined (it shows in your server's member list) and that you're a member of the server.
- **The invite says I can't add bots.** You need **Manage Server** in that server. Ask the owner.
- **"Role order" fails.** Drag the Crew role higher in **Server Settings → Roles**, then run the
  check again.
- **Slash commands are missing.** Discord can take a minute to show new commands. Restart Discord;
if they still don't appear, ask in the support Discord.
