# Onboarding checklists

Give new members a list of tasks, for them and their manager, that Crew assigns automatically.

Onboarding checklists make sure nothing is forgotten when someone joins: reading the rules, getting
access to the right channels, a first chat with their manager. Crew gives each new member the
checklists that apply to them, and both sides tick tasks off on the member's profile.

## Creating a checklist

Super Users open **Settings → Onboarding → Onboarding checklists** and click **New checklist**:

- **Name**: for example _Welcome to Support_.
- **For**: everyone, or one department.
- **Tasks**: up to 50. Each task is done either by the **member** or by their **manager**.

Editing a checklist changes it for people who get it from then on. Checklists people already have
keep their tasks.

## Who gets which checklist

- **New members** get every checklist for everyone, plus their department's.
- **Members who move department** get the new department's checklists (ones they already have aren't
  given twice).
- **By hand**: a manager or Super User opens a profile and uses **Assign a checklist**. Useful for
people who joined before the checklist existed.

## Ticking tasks off

Checklists appear on the member's profile under **Onboarding**, with progress for each one.

- The **member** ticks their own tasks.
- **Managers** in their reporting line, and Super Users, can tick any task, including the manager
  tasks.

Each ticked task shows who ticked it. A checklist is complete when every task is done; unticking a
task reopens it. New checklists are announced to the member by DM (see
[Notifications](/crew/notifications)).

> [!TIP]
> Keep tasks short and checkable: "Read #rules", "Meet your team lead", "Get access to the
> scheduling channel". Put longer explanations in an announcement or a training.

## Custom profile fields

The same settings page holds **Custom profile fields**, the extra details you keep on every profile.
See [Members and profiles](/crew/members#custom-fields).
